Comfort For A 10 Year Old Girl

The Supreme Court Dobbs decision resulted in a 10 year old girl, pregnant by rape, having to travel to Ohio for an abortion. Since the decision, it's estimated that there have been 64,000 rape related pregnancies in the 14 states that have enacted a ban on the procedure. I think about that girl and others like her and how we, as adults, have let her down.

Portrait Of My Immigrant Mother

My mother is depicted as Guan Yin, the goddess (or bodhisattva) of Mercy and protector of children, in the format of a traditional Chinese ancestor portrait. Her progeny are depicted in traditional garments but with definite references to American culture. Like so many other immigrants, my mother traveled to the US to give her children the opportunities and freedom she never had.
